A simple desire so possibly complex to fulfill (In Nomine)

May all the gods bless Ferny, Jaina Bee, Darius, Dave, and Keeper for their support of my RPG efforts!  They, like all of my patrons who help me out with at least $10 a month, saw this post a week early!  Would you like to do the same?  You can help me out here!

Essie W. “Candi” Clark, one of Mama Peche’s submissives

Candi isn’t the center of Mama Peche’s attention, and she’s okay with that.  She was never much burdened with dreams of true love when it came to her relationship with, well, with anyone actually.  Besides, she can get all the attention she needs when she wants from anyone nearby.  Weirdly, Mama Peche finds their relationship relaxing and refreshing for exactly this reason.  Candi asks for nearly nothing, so she is where Mama Peche goes to relax and wind down.

The Atlanta bus driver enjoys trading her intelligence away in exchange for sexual objectification.  Many of her fellow bimbofication fetishists engage in this as a kind of erotic role-play, preserving the rest of their personality to be enjoyed later.  Candi is not one of them; she is a lifestyle bimbo who has had a battery of plastic surgeries on Mama Peche’s infernal dime.  Now, she looks like a walking sex-fantasy of a Barbie and has never been more aroused.

Candi is on the hunt at the convention.  Mama agreed to host a gangbang larger than any Candi’s taken before, using certain hypnotic technques (actually demonic powers, of course) to rid her of what scraps of brainpower still linger inside her skull so that she can be used until she passes out and then some more.  Every warm and Dominant body Candi encounters (of any and all genders) will be sized up for their capacity to join in, and quickly propositioned if they seem acceptable.  Mama Peche will not be happy if her relaxing, low-stakes gangbang gets crashed by someone working on the other side.

A demon can have multiple girlfriends, y'know ;-) (In Nomine)

Thank you so much to my patrons Ferny, Jaina Bee, Darius, Dave, and Keeper!  They, like all of my patrons who help me out with at least $10 a month, saw this post a week early!  Would you like to do the same?  You can help me out here!

You can buy me a cup of coffee every month, like so many people with Patreons say, but I am also overjoyed if you buy me just one cup of coffee a year!  Tiers start at $1 a month because the most important thing to me is to know that people like what I write.  Of course, tiers go up to $500 a month, if you're feeling a spirit of generosity!

Rebecca W. Baum

Against all odds, Rebecca has found true happiness in the service of a demon.  An intense painslut, she’s spent her adult life chewing through the BDSM community looking for a sadist to match, finding only disappointment until she met Mama Peche.  The habbalah had no problem taking Rebecca where she wanted to go, and the sheer refreshing surprise of that swept Rebecca off her feet.  The last year has been heaven.  Bruised, bloody heaven.

For her part, Mama Peche has a grand old time wrapping Rebecca around her finger.  She nurtured a growing obsession in the fertile soil of a lifelong hunger finally being met.  Nothing the demon did challenged or changed Rebecca’s feelings for her husband Darryl; it was too clearly true love and messing with it would risk losing such a fun toy!

Recently, however, Mama Peche seems to have lost interest.  She doesn’t try as hard to think of new ways to push Rebecca’s edges as she used to; their scenes aren’t as creative as they once were.  Don’t think for one second that Rebecca hasn’t noticed what changed.  That slut Pamela is getting all of Mama Peche’s attention!

This jealousy has grown within Rebecca completely under the Gluttony demon’s nose, distracted as she’s been.  It’s bubbling within the mortal, threatening to explode unpredictably at any moment.  Mama Peche is hers, goddammit, and ain’t no hussy gonna horn in on the action!

Rebecca’s husband knows about her relationship with Mama Peche.  Existing somewhere in the space between polyamory and swinging, he is simply over the moon that his wife has found someone to help her feel good in a way that he cannot.  He may be Dominant as all get out, but humiliation play just doesn’t scratch the same itch as pain play.  Darryl has tried to find some amount of juice in painplay of every stripe, repeatedly.  It’s just not his thing.

Pamela met Mama Peche at Pride five years ago, which makes her time serving the demon at least twice as long as any of Mama Peche’s previous submissives.  An instigator at heart, just shy of being a brat, something glinted in the human’s eye that day that the habbalah found irresistible.

The turning point in their relationship came when things had begun to grow stale.  Pamela demanded that Mama Peche open up, reveal her inner self, commit to the relationship.  She showed her own commitment to it by doggedly pestering the servitor of Gluttony with this demand.  No demon is truly noted for its patience, and Mama Peche is no different.  Her temper shredded, she sang the clanging harmonies of the Songs of Numinous Corpus and revealed her inner self to Pamela.

To Mama Peche’s utter shock, Pamela was into it.  The idea of surrendering to actual, literal, no-shit evil excited her; the betrayal of every virtue she holds so dear presented the ultimate arousal.

Gifted with the intense sadism of an EMT to match her submissiveness, Pamela isn’t a Soldier of Hell, though not for lack of trying on Mama Peche’s part.  Their scenes have been getting more and more intense, burying the pain play under layer upon layer of mind games.  Mama Peche hopes thereby to create that powerful moment when a human spontaneously grows an extra Force in response to stress.  This focus and effort has not gone unnoticed; Rebecca, in particular, grows more and more jealous of Pamela by the day.

The art of the splat

I've been writing an adventure for Steve Jackson Games's out-of-print angel & demon RPG In Nomine called Game of Stones: Everything is Peachy with my friend Traumermachen of the Liber Neglecta blog.  In Nomine is one of my favoritest RPGs ever; no other game has so perfectly and artfully designed its splats as In Nomine has.  Chronicles of Darkness has gotten close, but the z splat is a bit of a jury-rig t cover up some imperfections in how they did it, frankly, even if CofD did a lot of really awesome things with its z splats (Mage, I'm looking at your Legacies, qween).

If an In Nomine player tells you their character is a Seraph of Children or a Calab of Gluttony or what-have-you, you can immediately construct a fairly accurate idea of that character in your head.  However, that idea isn't confining at all; almost any concept can develop out of almost any combination of splats.  I have never seen any game manage to do both of those things so eloquently as In Nomine.

It also taught me that "balance" is mostly a bugaboo in a lot of role-playing games; it's almost entirely unimportant.  As the game mixes concepts as broad as Touched By an Angel, God Friended Me, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, The Omen, The Seventh Seal, Legion (the movie, not the series, obvi), Lucifer (both the comic and the series, honestly), Good Omens, and much more, the various powers and abilities given to characters can range as wildly as "people cannot refuse the food I cook" and "I always go first in combat" and they're all weighted equally.  Famously, the multi-person-possessing kuriotates are massively more powerful than any other type of angel or demon, and yet they seem to be one of the less commonly played splats, if anything.

In Nomine does this by configuring the stakes of any conflict very carefully.  Ultimately, the goals of the war are simple, with clear but permeable lines of opposition.  But they are also relatively esoteric/mysterious and numinous.  The fight over territory is just a piece of the war for human souls, and what gets an individual into heaven or hell can be VERY surprising (and famously minor and banal sometimes).  The warriors achieve something by fighting off the other side, but the more social/mental characters are the ones who are winning objectives.

And, of course, for many demons, "I got mine" or "I had fun" is a complete and sufficient goal.

Bandlaik, rigger and returned einheriar in service to Freya (dreamshade)

Half of all who die a good death go to Valhalla, as modern memory still records.  The other half, forgotten by current trends, is chosen by Valfreyja, Freya of the Slain, to join her in Folkvangr.  Freya’s many-seated hall, Sessrumnir, lies within that land, the central governing place of that field.  Bandlaik lived there for a millennium or more.  Time passes oddly in the dream-places, and it was quite long.

In life, Bandlaik was not much different than the many children of the fjords.  Sure, practicing seidhr cast aspersions upon him that he might enjoy the rough pleasures of a bottom, but ergi or not, the matter was settled with a series of holmgangs and anyone who watched him fight while a-viking.  He often spoke, too, of Odin hanging himself from Yggsdrasil as a sacrifice of himself to himself so as to learn the secrets of the seidh.  What harm was there, he argued, in learning and teaching in Glad of War’s own way?

Bandlaik sharpened the blade of his dreams every night, the whetstone of the day scraping down their length with ever-present force.  Many mourned when a Slavic warrior caught a lucky strike on Bandlaik’s back during a raid.  The seer-warrior lost the use of his legs that day, and rumors flew down too-well-worn ruts to claim that his glorious days ended when the Slav chose not to kill him.  The Norseman laughed at these rumors.

Shifting his focus to more domestic martial pursuits, Bandlaik became an expert in fortification and defense, a master at extending the longevity of the few Norse colonies.  The Kievan Rus’ felled him when they overran his settlement’s walls and shields by sheer weight of horseflesh.  His last dying thoughts seized onto those sharpened dreams of Folkvangr and Sessrumnir, and before he knew it, his soul was snagged upon his queen’s realm, not yet ready to give up the fight and move on to a final reward.

It was good for a while.  A long while.  Death was everything Bandlaik had hopd it would be, fighting when he chose to, singing when he chose to, the most delicious food and drink he could imagine, available to him with the simple effort of imagining it.  Then the angels came.

With a black-winged zealot at their head, angels of all choirs came rushing through the lands of the gods like the very locusts they had sent against the Egyptians.  This was no war for territory or argument or glory or loot.  It was a far more ignoble kind of war, one fought for purity, which is to say: this was murder wrapped in a war’s clothes and called by the wrong name.

First, Olympus fell, and then Fair Ament.  Thor, of course, wanted to fight.  Many agreed, but Odin called for a more defensive tactic, a stand at Bifrost Bridge to draw the line, and then fortifications to hold back Heaven’s dogged forces.  Bandlaik helped prepare those battlements, and imagined into being the mechanisms that would allow them to surprise the angels with their appearance.

Bandlaik saw Thor ignore Odin’s hornblow call to retreat.

As Asgard withdrew from the Marches as a whole, becoming insular and infected with a centuries-long cabin fever, Bandlaik’s afterlife grew less and less fun.  More than once, he considered loosing his bonds to Sessrumnir and moving on to his final reward.  He was a good man, and knew he would go to Heaven, and that was why he kept refusing.  He wasn’t going to give Uriel the satisfaction.

His malaise was not aided by the trickle of Essence which began to return to Asgard a thousand years after the Crusade and picked up speed a century after that.  This Essence smelled wrong, tainted as it was with the same ridiculous and disgusting idea as those of the Heavenly Host who had felled Thor that day.  Although Bandlaik was one of the few einheriar that still served the Aesir unfelled, he began to forsake a canny Odin who saw only Essence that could be used against those who would oppress or kill the Aesir.

Bandlaik spent more and more time with Valfreyja, learning more of the ways of love and the valkyrie.  The 1970s brought with them the first steady trickle of Essence untainted with purity.  Accepting and universalist, this was the mountain stream that braced Bandlaik’s despairing soul.  Almost five decades later, he has petitioned his queen to grant him a vessel that he might walk among the mortal dreamers, recruiting new einheriar to fight beside him and furthering the cause of Freyja and Asgard in the corporeal realm.

And, after discovering what the modern world meant by “dungeon”, just plain enjoying himself occasionally.

Mary Reba “Miss Velvet” Pleasant, currently known as Lord Griffith

When Mary Reba Pleasant went to the Library shortly after her death, it took some cross-referencing among the many books there to figure out why her Destiny was a darkly sensual, percussion-heavy theme, richly resonant and ornately delicate.  There was only a single report that mentioned her, and the mercurian who wrote it interpeted this melody as a Destiny to be a successful high-class professional dominatrix.  The Black graduate student followed that thread of research into the lives of her clients and came to the conclusion that she had spread selfless concern for intersectional liberation among powerful business executives.  Until the tragic car crash that claimed her life in 2007, her career involved ordering the wealthy white men who patronized her (sometimes in both meanings of the word) to read the writings of Black feminist and socialist theorists.  At least three non-profits sprung from this work, founded by men who had seen her, amidst innumerable shifts in corporate policy and lobbying goals.

As a Bodhisattva, Mary Reba dallied long in the Halls of Creation and the Glade, and even made some surprisingly regular trips over to the Church of the Sword, whiling away the Paradisiacal days chatting philosophy amongst the throngs in its halls as well as in more individual assgnations amongst its many rooms.  Much like Laurence’s Church, the Catacombs received her often, and she acted much the same there, too.  Those blessed, community-minded souls who explore the practice of selfless gossip probably shouldn’t have been as shocked as they were when Mary Reba submitted a saintly petition to an Archangel named something other than Eli or David.

Khalid smiled when she asked him if she could do his work on Earth, according to the angels Habib and Artiya’il who were in attendance at the time.  “But though you are mubarak, neither are you Muslim nor are you even paricularly invested in any other Faith.”

“Wali malak, what you say is true.  My Faith has always been invested in people and in politics, but that is the very crux of why I did approach thee with my petition.  I do believe that I have come to a realization concerning the nature of your Word that by need must be shared with one you have also had.”

Khalid chuckled, Habib and Artiya’il say, and that was his sole response.

“Faith is not a thing limited in direction to the upward-pointed eyes.  Trust in another is a type of Faith.  Vulnerability is a type of Faith.  Willingness to be led is a type of Faith.”

“Knowing your history, do you presume to the hubristic blasphemy that you can be the object of this Faith?”

“I am ever naught but a vessel for whatever Divinity casts ths light within which we are meeting.  I have been led to believe that the Qu’ran describes humans as Allah’s successor on Earth.  Humbly, that is all the work I wish to do in the corporeal realm.”

Khalid granted Reba’s request, and now Lord Griffith travels throughout the world, teaching those who wish to submit how to do so in the face of their greatest fears and long practice holding to their Will white-knuckled as the only force steering them through the world.

Alokhosiel, kuriotes vassal of Animals under Bloodsuckers under Insects, angel of Bedbugs

The concerns of Jordi, archangel of Animals, rarely coincide with those of Blandine, archangel of Dreams.  Jordi still views her with some slight suspicion, dating back 27 millennia to Heaven’s discovery that the human imagination could create sentient beings in the ethereal realm.  It took Michael himself, archangel of War, firstborn of Heaven, Guardian of the Watchtower of the South, and one of the Four Horsemen, and his words to save humanity from Jordi’s rage at their distracting abstraction.  The ethereal realm is Blandine’s domain, and she is much more fond of Homo sapiens than Jordi is.

Nonetheless, they disagree with the same archangels and, for the most part, the two just plain rarely think about the other and their works.  Rimu, the angel of Unicorns, malak of Animals in service to Dreams, is well-known among the Host as one of the rare exceptions to this detente.  A former djinn of Lust whose Redemption was sponsored by the archangel of Animals, his wings almost immediately turned black in the Light of Heaven.  Alokhosiel, however, is an even rarer example, in that they work with Blandine’s servitors and has even been rewarded by her for that work, but Alokhosiel remains firmly in the service of Jordi.

They are an old angel, serving for many millions of years beneath Atalef, the ofan angel of Bats, often possessing a species of parasites that used the winged mammals as hosts.  When human effects on the ethereal realm were discovered, Jordi sponsored Alokhosiel for the Word of Bedbugs, a 5-10 million year old branch of those parasites’ evolution that had come to haunt the beds of early humans.  Yves, archangel of Destiny, with his constant smile that is somehow both devious and indulgent, was the first to vote in favor.  The archangel of Animals tasked his choirmate with the mission of keeping humans awake and thereby limiting their ability to effect the ethereal realm by their dreams.  A mission Jordi never officially rescinded, though only a couple millennia later everything changed when the Eden Experiment failed and Lucifer rebelled.  That was 22,625 p.e.v.

Lilith threw open the gates of Hell in 15,000 p.e.v., kicking off the War with her undeniable statement that Freedom is to be first among all values.  Alokhosiel took it upon themself to reinterpret Jordi’s wishes into the fight against this new enemy.  They learned the Songs of Dreams and began to protect the sentient apes for whom they had begun to develop a fondness from the demons who would harm them while they slept, in either the corporeal realm where their regenerative rest left them vulnerable or the ethereal realm where human thought and belief were the prize to be won as angels and demons fought.

This is the work Alokhosiel continues to do to this day, and Blandine herself has noticed.  She considered approaching Jordi to bring the kuriotes into her service, but as the inventor of love and once the embodiment of Hope, she didn’t need to consult with Lang (mercurian of Destiny and angel of Foresight) to know that such an ask would not go over well.  Nonetheless, she has rewarded Alokhosiel with a rite and a couple of attunements, even as Jordi has promoted them to the rank of Vassal.  As a Vassal, they are in loose command of eight or so unranked angels, mostly other kuriotes.  An ofan by the name of Cimex serves to keep Alokhosiel in contact with their old friend Atelef, and Pishpesh (a malak) has seized the chance to ambush demons unexpectedly by serving the angel of Bedbugs.  A mercurian of Dreams in service to Animals who is known as Vants ferries messages between Blandine and Alokhosiel.

Dissonance:  Being swayed by the concerns of human society, its rules, or its expectations; Value human life over animal life; Kill sloppily or with torture.
*  Angel of Bedbugs:  Whenever someone with this attunement spends Essence to improve a Move Silently roll, they also reduce their shortest dimension (depth for most humans) by one-half per point of Essence spent.  For example, if Alokhosiel (inhabiting a human body measuring 10 inches from nose to back of head) spent 3 Essence to raise the target of their Move Silently roll to 9, the body of the human they're possessing would be reduced by 7/8 to 1.25 inches, allowing them to squeeze into much smaller cracks.
**  Angel of Bloodsuckers:  If someone with this attunement successfully hits with a melee attack without being noticed, they reduce the amount of disturbance caused by the number of ranks they have in the Move Silently skill (but at least by 1).
***  Angel of Insects:  Someone with this attunement may add their Corporeal Forces to any Climbing roll or roll to hold onto, hang from, or balance on a surface.  Including things like hanging upside down from the ceiling.

Converting Alokhosiel to GURPS In Nomine require some diversion from strictly following the procedure given in GIN, because GIN has a mechanical tool that In Nomine itself does not: the Extra Mind Hits advantage.  That direct conversion method from the book resulted in Alokhosiel being smarter than any mortal human alive, possibly ever (IQ 22), which was over-the-top on its own, but that also resulted in them having virtuoso levels of ability in every Song they possessed.  My solution was to start from that strict conversion and then to reduce Alokhosiel's IQ to reasonable levels while increasing their levels of Extra Mind Hits to compensate.  After all, the reason I gave them such a high Intelligence in IN was to model that famous bedbug hardiness in their realm of focus.

*  As a relatively quick and rough conversion of the attunement described above, treat this as the Shrinking advantage, with the -60% limitation that it only affects the one dimension, the -15% limitation that it costs a variable amount of Essence, and the +30% enhancement that the user retains their usual hit points.  That's a total of -45% to the cost of Shrinking.  Technically, 9 levels should be purchased, which would cost 225 points, but it is highly unlikely that Alokhosiel would ever want to spend 5 Essence to shrink a human to a depth of 0.5 mm.  While that would still be possible, I've set the cost to the equivalent of 5 levels, plus 5 points to cover the permanent link between this power and spending Essence on Stealth rolls.
**  If someone with this attunement successfully hits with a melee attack without being noticed, they reduce the amount of disturbance caused by the amount by which their Stealth skill is larger than their DX-3 (so in Alokhosiel's case, by 4).
***  Someone with this attunement adds their Corporeal Power to any Climbing roll or roll to hold onto, hang from, or balance on a surface.  Including hanging upside down from the ceiling.
☧  This attunement is used to merge the dreamscapes of two separate dreamers, so that they “meet” one another in their dreams. It requires 2 Essence. Both dreamscapes must be active and occupied, and in the same part of the Marches (within what passes for “line of sight” in the ethereal realm). Once two dreamers are joined, the dreams also join, and support one another. If one of the dreamers fails a skill roll by 6 or more, the dream will not automatically slide into the realm of Nightmare unless the other dreamer does so, too. And if the first dreamer makes any successful skill roll before that happens, the “nightmare slip” is nullified entirely, and both dreamers once again have “clean slates” until another skill roll fails by 6 or more. However, it is equally difficult to slip out of Beleth’s grasp once in it . . . if a merged dreamscape passes into the darker side of the Marches, it takes two successes, both by 6 or more, for an automatic journey back. A merged dreamscape contains elements of the psyche of both dreamers, and the dreamers are both “along for the ride” together. If either dreamer wakes up, the merge is gently broken, and the two dreamscapes drift apart again.
🔯  3 points/level:  Every level of this advantage allows you to store and spend one extra point of Essence; this can allow you to exceed the usual 2/3 HT limit.  It also grants a +1 bonus on aging rolls made as a result of your Soul Hits going to 0 or less.

In In Nomine, Alokhosiel is relatively weak.  Without their Word and the rites and attunements of their intermediate superiors (the angels of Bloodsuckers and Insects), they're really not much more powerful than a starting angelic PC.  They thus lends themself both to serving as the immediate superior or mentor of an appropriate PC (probably one of Animals or of Dreams, obviously), as well as to storylines emphasizing one of my favoritestest themes in all of In Nomine ~ that the existence of the Divine elevates every tiniest bit of the world, no matter how small, to the greatest level of significance, and that the struggle between Fate and Destiny draws attention to that significance where otherwise it can easily be forgot.

GURPS, on the other hand, as it always will with kuriotates, stresses just how ungodly (ha!) powerful they are.  I mean seriously, the absolute minimum point total for a kuriotes is 693 points, and for a kuriotes of Animals its 698.  This puts them, by default, at significantly higher than the standard GURPS Supers starting level and about equal to a black op from GURPS Black Ops.  Here, the theme might be that even the weakest of angels stands far superior to humanity and that danger can come from any crack or crevasse.  It can be an object lesson in human pride and arrogance, if the spirit behind such seemingly miniscule, weak beings as bedbugs stands equal to the most ridiculously talented, highly trained ubermenschen that the human species can produce.  Alokhosiel, thus, works well as either an ally or an enemy of a black ops team getting involved in matters way over even their elevated heads.  It's a little grittier than I think most GURPS Black Ops games would play, but I think it fits strongly into the setting from all three of GURPS Black Ops's genre inspirations: neo-noir, cosmic espionage, and Men in Black.

Todahlael, Habbalah of Ignorance*, Demon of Gratitude

Well, it's a day late and a dollar short, but I created a character for In Nomine encapsulating some of my feels/observations from yesterday (the so-called "Thanksgiving").  I'm actually quite fond of her.

She's a servitor of Ascetus, the balseraph demon prince of Ignorance and one of many non-canon Superiors in my version of In Nomine (which I call Reality Beulah, for reasons I'll explain later).  I'ven't written him up yet, but he's a blend of Ascetus and Astaroth from the In Nomine Collection's Rogue Gallery.  All relevant game information has been provided.

*****************

Todahlael, like many celestials, is a very old being.  She was created in Ketriel's service, and diligently, dispassionately served the aeon archangel of Grace for millions of years before the Fall.  And it wasn't the Fall that sent her to Hell, either, as she fought those who are now her friends and allies after Metatron's murder.  Afterwards, secure in the knowledge that the newly-minted demons were safely locked away forever, she continued just as she had before the Rebellion, bringing joyful surprises and easing luck to the humans who had been the excuse for that shocking crime.  And then the human Lilith freed the demons.

Though her faith that everything would turn out for the best by the grace of God had finally been shaken, Todahlael settled into the new role with which Ketriel, the first of the Archangels known as the Four Soteroi, charged its angels with an odd mix of comfort and desperation.  Salvation, after all, comes from many sources ~ famously, from grace, faith, and acts.  Todahlael and her coworkers coordinated well with Yves's angels, arranging for the sort of inexplicable gifts and luck that came at just the right time to rescue a human soul from becoming the plaything of the liberated demons.  But the entire time, she hid in her Heart a secret wish that someone would do the same for her, would restore her faith in the God which created her and rescue her from the Fate she feared she knew was awaiting her.

Ketriel had been clear in its charge ~ grace is not grace if it can be caused.  In other words, asking for grace destroys the possibility of grace.  Todahlael was nothing if not dutiful, and took the aeon's teaching to heart.  She never asked for the help she needed so greatly, and so she never received it.  Her Outcasting and Fall were slow, a creeping teeter that lasted from Lilith's unlocking the gates to Hell in 15,000 p.e.v. (prior era vulgaris, before the common era) all the way to her Heart shattering during the first part of the 4th century e.v., during Constantine the Great's reign as Byzantine Emperor.

Rejecting the gentleness of her past, Todahlael took up with Malphas, wielding unexpected luck as a weapon against relationships and unity.  Nothing promotes a lonely individuality like jealousy over a friend's seemingly unbalanced good fortune.  This work kept her busy for a millennium and a half, slowly working her way all over the globe, taking inconspicuous roles amongst the irredeemable throngs of the human herd.  Often, she chose to appear as a supporter of some alliance or solidarity, while secretly working to undermine it, to set it ablaze with the disastrous inferno of envy.

Like most of her friends in the service of Factions, the American Civil War was yet another orgy of a party in an increasingly dense social calendar.  Such joy Todahlael found as brother fought against brother, bloodily severing ties for often insignificant reasons.  General Lee, for example, who believed in the North's cause but fought for the South simply because it was his home.  It was one of Todahlael's friends who outmaneuvered the malakim surrounding the general, turning Lee's honor against the unifying actions Heaven wanted to see from him.

As so often happens, this constant din of fun and games lent itself to a moment of melancholy.  For Todahlael, this came when she read Lincoln's declaration of Thanksgiving (reproduced after this paraggraph).  A long-unaccustomed sadness struck the habbalah who couldn't help remembering her days with Ketriel as an angel, as the "[n]o human cousel [that] hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things."  She finished the war out with a dingy enthusiasm, unable to shake that memory, so incompatible with her habbalic belief that Hell was where God wanted her.  Returning to a familiar feeling ~ desperation ~ Todahlael sought to eliminate these memories and thoughts, to no longer be troubled by an unwelcome longing for the Light of Heaven.  If Mariel hadn't been devoured by a munchy-haunted Haagenti, she'd likely have pulled off some hare-brained scheme designed to remove herself from Malphas's service to that of Oblivion.  However, Mariel had proved tasty some centuries before, and so Todahlael settled for jumping ship into the service of Ascetus instead.

"The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth."

Proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, October 3, 1863."

The work of Ignorance didn't suit Todahlael as well as her previous two jobs, and it certainly did not have the memory-exorcising effect she wished.  She found herself obsessed with Thanksgiving Day, doing her prince's work by using it every month as a way to spread ignorance of the true cost of the pleasures and gifts the U.S. populace had received.  The rest of the year saw the fruits of Todahlael's practice for that one day in November; she grew quite deft at nurturing vague, impersonal gratitude as a way to prevent atrocities from coming to light or responsibility being taken for the actions of an individual, group, or their ancestors.  Ironically, she became known among Ascetus's servitors for exactly this kind of work.

Though she had been, quite naturally, stripped of all the gifts Malphas had given her in her 1500-year-service to the prince of Factions, Todahlael found herself quickly acquiring replacements over the course of a mere century serving Ascetus.  By the century's end, she was among Ascetus's knights, and she was granted a captainship shortly after Macy's started their parade.  Her focus, nigh unto a djinnish obsession, with the day in which an entire country ate more food than any other day, even more than a few days combined, convinced Haagenti to grant her his attunement, as well.

It was Thanksgiving Day, 1954, that Todahlael, firmly ensconced in the role of a sweet little old church lady, led a prayer at a charity dinner her church was leading.  Afterwards, a snappily dressed man who had been introduced to her an hour or two before as one of the big donors to the church's charity programs walked up to her.  "I liked your prayer," he said.  "Especially how it avoided any of the real reasons we've got all this food to give.  And why they're poor, for that matter.  It's you who should be Grateful."  And suddenly, Todahlael knew who the handsome man was, as she felt the Word shoulder itself a space among her Forces.  She stammered out a "Thank you" to the man's bemusedly cocked eyebrow, one half of his mouth smiled, and he turned and disappeared into the crowd.

Ever since, Todahlael has continued the same work that earned her her Word, encouraging humans to mimic the humble selflessness of thanks as a way of avoiding guilt, responsibility, or critical thought as to what they could do to prevent the evil of the world.  Not a few demons distrust her now, uncertain what to do with a demon ~ especially one of the habbalot ~ who carries such a seemingly Heavenly Word.  To tell the truth (but why would we do that?), Todahlael herself has struggled with her Word, as it is all too easy for her efforts to have the opposite effect of that she intended.  Her doubts about her place in the Descending Hierarchy have fled, however.  God's Hellish representative (Lucifer) rewarded her for her efforts, after all ~ this must be the work God wants her to do.

Todahlael is still adjusting to having received a Word, and such a big Word at that!  She's only held it for about 65 years, two-fifths of her time in the service of Ascetus, and a mere fraction of an eyeblink for a being whose age is measured in the billions of years, which accounts for her possessing only a single Word-Attunement when most celestials with such a Word have two.  In truth, she knows that she has access to fewer Word-Forces than she should ~ surely Gratitude is a major Word! ~ but she's been facing some strong opposition from Maodea, her Heavenly counterpart, the angel of Giving Thanks (ofan of the Sword under Etiquette), who's been getting aid from the angel of Charity (a malak of Generosity) and the angel of Restitution (an eloah of Judgment).  The inherent dangers of her Word, on top of the lasting effects of her earlier doubts concerning her diabolicity, have resulted in a bit of Discord.  Todahlael's vessel's stoop and slow gait aren't intended to mimic arthritis ~ they are actually arthritis, and will be carried over into any other vessel she might take.  Similarly, she finds a good feast almost impossible to pass up, and she always overeats.

Celestial Appearance:  Todahlael has allowed the ravages of age to show on her celestial form.  It remains luminous, glowing with a grayish-brown light the color of poorly-cooked meat, and her eyes appear even larger than they did before the Fall behind broad-diametered rose-colored coke-bottle glasses.  They are human eyes, though, not the alien eyes of the elohim, and they are a much more pleasant brown than the light which surrounds her, the color of a crispy, fatty turkey skin promising delicious delights beneath.  Whereas elohim tend to carry an ageless, vital androgyny, Todahlael's Fallen form is androgynous by dint of age, so withered and twisted and stick-thin dry that no gender can be ascertained among the pale wrinkles that envelop her form.  It is those wrinkles that provide a topographical map to the self-mutilations that mark Todahlael as a habbalah.  Piercings ride the crest of these fleshy waves, while tattoos peek out from their valleys.  Scars artfully interrupt their sumptuous curves, and the twin edges of her flayed edges blend imperceptibly into the ridges of ancient skin.  No clothing covers her form, though a couple of napkins seem to have blown against her chest and crotch, stuck there by a wind unseen and unfelt except by those napkins' flapping.  A fork and a knife (to which is attached the flag of whichever country the nearest human is a citizen of) fill her hands.

Vessel:  An older woman in her 80s, shorter than her skeleton would actually warrant thanks to a stoop that tells of long hours spent hunched over a keyboard.  Her hair is the faded black of a cheap dyejob covering up a soft silver, and her brown eyes are filled with a watery-warm sincerity.  Cat-eyes glasses on a pearled string often rest atop a pale blue sweater that covers up a long, floral dress.  Her shoes are reasonable, and her nails sport a new pastel every other week.

Role ~ Little Old Church Lady/4 (Status/2)
Servant ~ Pastor/2 (Class/4)
Skills ~ Artistry (Cooking)/4, Computer Operation/2, Emote/5, Savoir-Faire/3, Singing/1
Attunements ~ Captain of Twisted Memory**, Demon of Gratitude***, Habbalah of Gluttony, Habbalah of Ignorance****, Knight of Stupidity*****, Memory Gap******, Modern Dark Age*******
Songs ~ Charm (Ethereal/6, Celestial/3), Forbidding (Ethereal/3), Harmony (Corporeal/6), Opening (Ethereal/3, Celestial/1), Seals (Ethereal/5), Solace (Ethereal/5), Succor (Corporeal/2)
Additional Rites ~ Lead a prayer (or equivalent) of impersonal or vague thanks; Spend an hour in conversation, monologue, or writing (et cetera) downplaying/ignoring/covering up past or present atrocities
Discord ~ Disabled/3********, Gluttonous/1, Pity/1, Obsessed (Thanksgiving)/1

*  It is dissonant for a servitor of Ascetus to correct any belief that goes against the facts, or to promote education or enlightenment.  Rites:  Convince someone not to think twice; Spread a lie to the public, by posting it to the Net, handing out flyers in the street for an hour, etc.
**  These are the most feared vassals of Ignorance, as they can twist known and unknown concepts into knots that cannot be deciphered. By spending 4 essence, they can change a 'truth' into whatever they chose. For example, they could change the answers in the back of a particular book, change a few 1's to 0's in machine code, or make a Macintosh a real computer, but they couldn't change pi to equal 4 or any universally affecting 'constant'.
***  As long as someone is even vaguely or indirectly experiencing pleasure, Todahlael can cause them to ignore one unpleasant thing per point of Essence spent, with a successful Will roll.  The Attunement's effects only last as long as the specific pleasure does, though events during its effects can prolong the results.  Normally, this Attunement must be activated individually for each intended victim; however, if Todahlael cooks a feast to be used as the anchoring pleasure, the Attunement will affect a number of people equal to the check digit of her Artistry (Cooking) roll with each activation.
****  Same as Habbalah of Factions.
*****  By concentrating on someone and spending one essence, the knight can sense the one thing that the person has little or no knowledge, but wishes to learn about.  {And, yes, "stupidity" is a word with a long ableist, racist, and classist history.  This is Hell we're talking about, after all.}
******  The demon can cause a target to forget a specific piece of information. This requires a Contest of Will vs. the target's Perception; the demon may spend Essence to add to his will. The check digit determines the type of information that can be erased:
Check Digit~Information Lost
1~Something minor in short-term memory (a name or phone number just heard)
2~Something major in short-term memory (the just-heard time and place of a meeting)
3~Something minor in medium/long-term memory (the phone number at work; your spouse's middle name)
4~Something major in medium/long-term memory (the exit to get to your parents' house; the password to your AOL account)
5~Something minor in long-term memory (the name of your first-grade teacher)
6~Something major in long-term memory (your wedding anniversary; the Pythagorean Theorem)
Information lost in this way will be "on the tip of your tongue" or misremembered in such a way as to be useless. The target can be reminded of it, but must make a Will roll; the information is not retained until a successful roll is made.
*******  By spending 2 essence per person the demon wishes to affect (to a maximum of his celestial forces) he can have them interpret a sign, image, or oration the wrong way, or ignore the enlightening effects of teachers and books (negating any potential for learning from that source) for one day.
********  "Crippled" is a slur.

Religion and Boanerges (Fantasy Friday #4)

When we get to determining the proficiencies Boanerges gets as a splintersoul zealot vigilante, the time comes to finally determine his patron. Alignment matters here, too ~ vigilantes can have two alignments next to each other, zealots have alignment restrictions like clerics, and splintersouls qualify for class features and things if only one (not both) alignments does. I’m fairly strongly attached to him as CG/CN in a predominantly CE society, which (I realize now) changes who I’ve been thinking his archangel is.

Presterjho’s pantheon, as it were, is modeled on that of one of my favorite not-quite-obscure RPGs, In Nomine, Steve Jackson Game’s complete redesign of a French angels-and-demons game. So far, as I’ve been digging into the details of Boanerges, I’ve been assuming that he would follow Telakh, the hola archangel of Faith (equivalent to Khalid in In Nomine). But Telakh is staunchly lawful! Back to the drawing board . . . Gebhuri, naifo archangel of Fire (Gabriel) is something of a chaotic counterpart to Telakh, the burning ecstasy of faith as opposed to the rigid discipline thereof. But I’m feeling like Boanerges’s patron should be more neutral good. For one, this gives the splintersoul splintered identity some oomph, but on another, it reinforces the “sneaky redeemer” aspect of Boanerges, which I fear is getting lost. Let’s see, the list of neutral good archangels is:

Dhanebsonhi, kruv archangel of Dreams
Khashamsorof, kruv archangel of Children
Nanahoy, hola archangel of Lightning
Yorethil, faras archangel of Revelation
Themnoth, yaim archangel of the Voice
Newosli, kruv archangel of Flowers
Sennao, wekyosthet archangel of the Ocean
Awi, yaim archangel of Destiny
Razal, rogigyos archangel of Death

That’s 9 out of the 22 most popular archangels in Presterjho, easily the most common alignment thereamong.

Let’s see . . . I want a focus on redemption and converting folk to the cause of good, yeah? So we can immediately rule out Nanahoy, Yorethil, Themnoth, Sennao, and Razal, as they’re all more concerned with other things. That leaves Dhanebsohni, Khashamsorof, Newosli, and Awi. As much as I really enjoy making unusual servitors of Children in In Nomine, I think I’ll have Boanerges serve the very mysterious Awi, whose focus is entirely on ensuring that the world turns out for the better. It also makes Boanerges quite cosmopolitan, as he comes from Not-CentralAfrica and follows a religion from neighboring Presterjho shaded by the atheistic Jedi-like worship of Time centered in Scarhas (Destiny and Fate replace the Light and Dark Sides in that religion).

Awi believes that the use of weapons leads to rash actions, and that rash actions tend to fulfill Fate far more often than Destiny. Accordingly, his favored weapon is the unarmed strike, and Boanerges gets Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat.

Social talents available to Boanerges at 1st level are somewhat disappointing, actually. I think you’re expected to take renown, but that would dilute the theme of his discomfort at having to stuff his normally huge and flamboyant personality into a small and subtle secret identity, of intimidating bluster struggling towards compassionate persuasion. I consider gossip collector for a hot second, but it feels kinda tacked-on, not hitting any particular element of his character or background. I decide to go with social grace finally. We’ll choose Intimidate, to further the contrast (and cuz it’s Boanerges’s highest mental skill).

Zealot replaces vigilante specialization with an inquisitor’s inquisition, the choice of which is ridiculously easy: Boanerges benefits from the Redemption inquisition. Awi chose him as their agent specifically to seed goodness within an evil horde. The vigilante talent at 2nd level isn’t so easy. I consider the channel energy zealot talent, but that still seems like an “overwhelming presence” thing. Harsh judgment? It does allow the judgment of purity, which is awfully tempting when surrounded by inherently magical beings like ifrits. Magical familiarity, on the other hand, is within Awi’s purview, as he is the most arcane of the archangels, and also the most associated with time. I wonder if there are any good time-related cantrips to give Boanerges? Shadow’s speed and shadow’s sight seem like good, solid, boring workhorse talents, while steely resolve makes some sense for a servant of Awi, I suppose. Team player, on the other hand, seems appropriate enough to join harsh judgment (purity) and magical familiarity as the front-runners. A quick glance at the list of cantrips reveals nothing I want for Boanerges. Let’s go with harsh judgment (purity). And splintersoul requires us to take an early quick change talent at 3rd level (the earliness costs us unshakable, too).

When in his vigilante identity ~ which I realize I really should name . . . . how about, like, the Unseen Heart of the Flame? ~ Boanerges possesses a moderate aura of good. He can also cast spells like an inquisitor as the Unseen Heart. Or would, if his wisdom was higher >.< 5 points is a lot to ask for, but I wonder if we can’t make up for it with a magical item? The answer, sadly, is hell no ~ even the smallest boost of a +2 costs 4000 gp, and at 3rd level, Boanerges only has 3000.

I know a lot of players out there would say that I’ve made catastrophically suboptimal choices when building Boanerges, but I like to think that Awi had this exact process in mind by choosing him. Boanerges is meant to seed goodness within his horde, and the process of doing so is meant to build within him the wisdom that Awi so prizes. The plans of an archangel, let alone a yaim archangel (the yaim are not like other angels ~ they are direct emanations of the divine), are fractal, complicated, and multifaceted. In terms of planning for the future, Boanerges should be all caught up in terms of spellcasting by 7th level (with his 4th-level ability increase going to Wisdom, and a headband of inspired wisdom +4 costing 16,000 gp).

Sub-Creations

In the archangel Iwa's library, there is a cuneiform tablet, documenting the ravings of an ancient human prophet.  As is usual for prophecies, the text rambles vaguely and with great melodrama.  Roughly translated, it begins, "And at the coming of the one who will be the third avatar, a great house will be divided," goes on with a list of events (in prophet-ese) and ends with, "And the third avatar shall choose."

Most humans, these days, would look upon the prophecy as unmitigated drivel, and clichéd, too.  However, when Repha'el stumbled across it in the Library, prophecy was still something interesting.  She read it, decided that several of the predictions had already been fulfilled (the Fall, various other events), and happened to mention it to her servitor Y'hohanan, the angel of Lightning.

The pair of elohim -- the archangel of Knowledge and the angel whose Word encompassed inspiration -- spent a pleasant lazy summer dissecting the prophecy.  They arrived at the conclusion that the Symphony might indeed spawn off self-aware aspects.  These aspects, they decided, would have to have been created directly from the Symphony.  They would probably be indestructible, with Forces interwoven with the Symphony such that to destroy the avatar would necessitate destroying that part of the Symphony itself.  After a lengthy debate (as to whether Eru YHVH Iluvatar was an avatar Itself, a part of the Symphony that was self-aware without being separate, or an entity whose Word was, effectively, "the Symphony"), Y'hohanan wondered aloud if Iwa might be the first avatar.

Repha'el said, "Very interesting question.  I'll ask him."

And when she did, Iwa said, "Yes."

Repha'el quickly came to the conclusion that the logical second avatar might be Sker, Iwa's opposite number.  To that, Iwa replied, "Almost," and would say no more.  Repha'el then went off and wrote a treatise on the nature of the Symphony, avatars, and free will entitled "Avatars, the Symphony, and God", with two little discourses thrown in, one on the nature of Leukibher (whom she had determined must have been the second avatar) and one on prophecy.

"Those who know the future are doomed to repeat it," is the title of Repha'el's chapter on prophecy.  Most of her musings with Y'hohanan are included, either as support for the theory or as speculations on the logical conclusions of the avatar premise.  One of these is speculations on whether the third avatar should be used as a Symphonic tie-breaker between Fate and Destiny, or whether that avatar should form the nucleus of a third side in the War.  (Elohim like tough questions like that.)  In this discussion, she hints that, if you play with that "the Third Avatar shall choose" line, you may come to the conclusion that this doesn't necessarily mean "choose between the first and second avatars'" but simply "CHOOSE."  Which might well imply that while Iwa is a manifestation of the Symphony's Bright Destiny, and Leukibher of its Dark Fate (though see below), the hypothetical Third Avatar would be Free Will manifest.

Concerning Leukibher, she wrote in a section entitled "On Sub-Creation": "Imagine Leukibher before the Fall as a prism, with the shining white light of Truth taken into him and refracted so as to wring greater beauty from it.  This was how Leukibher was intended to be.  As a seraph and an archangel, Leukibher explored the possibilities of the Symphony and showed his brethren, sistren, bothren, othren,, and neithren new ways of looking at God's creation.  This ability to reveal to his brethren, sistren, bothren, othren, and neithren all of the colors and refractions of the Truth, unique to Leukibher, was at first a source of pride.

"Leukibher's pride was not Truth, and the dissonance of that pride drove him to madness and rebellion.  When Mikha-el cast Leukibher down, I am asserting that the prism that was Leukibher shattered, and Forces which had been part of Leukibher flew free from the metaphysical impact, creating a number of distinct 'shards'.  Leukibher, maddened and glutted with new power, would have maintained his new nature by compartmentalizing those parts of his psyche that did not mesh with the being that he became in the moment of his Fall.  These fragments, perhaps, then broke free as shards, each with a number of Forces attached -- sort of a spontaneous creation of new celestials.  As ages passed, some of those frgaments of his personality would have gained more and more Forces -- the children of his thought, the (often distorted) pieces of his Truth.  Each shard would thus hold a fragment of the Truth that was Leukibher, or a fragment of his nascent madness.  The Leukibher that God created (henceforth referred to as "Leukibher Prime") is likely no more.  The largest shard, a balseraph, would have convinced himself that he was Leukibher, and with the amount of power that had flowed into Leukibher Prime during the rebellion, none of the new demons had the will or temerity to challenge.  Besides, the rest of the rebels arrived in Hell somewhat later than Leukibher, who could create any story he wished and, as a balseraph, would believe it.

"Further research has shown the following to be reasonable possibilities for at least some of the more major shards.  One shard, which embodied the insubordination of Leukibher, became Azal, the balseraph demon of Insubordination.  Another shard, embodying the reverence of Leukibher for God over all, even in spite of God's favor for humanity, became Iblis the djinn, who by Islamic tradition was damned when he refused to bow before the first humans.  Yet another shard, embodying the impulse which led Leukibher to test Hawwah with temptation during the Edinnu Experiment, became Samael of Hebrew tradition, a habbalah, still testing the worthiness of humanity for Heaven and firmly convinced that he works in God's service.  The shard embodying the need of Leukibher to uncover and reveal the Truth eventually fledged into Litheroy, now the seraph archangel of Revelation.  Seeing as no one knows his origins, it seems quite probable that Leukibher's status as the original chooser of Fate over Destiny might have grown into Sker, the prince of Fate.  Perhaps one shard, holding fragments of outrage upswelling from Leukibher Prime's consciousness, nursed its rage through the eons until eventually fledging as a malak, and so on . . . .  The wildest theories -- that some of Leukibher's shards might have left the Symphony entirely and taken root in Ein Soph Aur to form separate Symphonies, subject to wild variations on the Divine Will -- still find themselves without effective counterargument.  Should they prove true, it is likely that the most reliable way to access these Sub-Creations would be to somehow travel through or by means of another Leukibher-shard.

"Only those shards that originally possessed (or later gained) Forces from all three realms (corporeal, ethereal, and celestial) could be considered viable celestials.  Other proto-shards, possessing Forces in only one or two realms, might still exist somewhere but would most likely have dissolved into the Symphony.  Still, there might be shadows in the Marches, each with a bit of disjointed wisdom, which never gained corporeal or celestial Forces, and Remnants of Leukibher Prime may lurk somewhere on Earth.

"Shards would be independent beings, with unique motivations and distinct personalities.  Though they share a common origin, they almost certainly would not conveniently fit back together like some celestial jigsaw puzzle, and most would likely heartily resist any efforts to do so.  They would not merge into celestial amalgam beings when they come into contact with one another.  Some ancient celestials who were around before the Fall might see a faint resemblance between a shard and their memory of Leukibher Prime, but it's been a long time.  I didn't."

In the last section of the manuscript, Repha'el mentions that she believes she can determine the identity of the Third Avatar.

Any search for the sequel to "Avatars, the Symphony, and God" turns up an extensive tactical summary of the battle with Leg -- troop movements, tactics, and a list of the dead.  The "Third Avatar" paper died, unwritten, with Repha'el.  Y'hohanan forgot all about such "youthful diversions" as he shouldered many of Repha'el's responsibilities.  The tablet and her first treatise were buried in the Library, and have not come to light for centuries.

Questions to Answer, Plot Points for the Future, and Musings:

  • Who is the ancient human prophet?
  • What are the events he lists?
  • Three different translations, in various languages, of "Avatars, the Symphony, and God"?  What's each's story?  How do they come to the PCs?
  • There is one Symphony-created individual who seems to embody Free Will, if not entirely in a good way: the princess of Freedom, Lilitu.
  • If you assume that the Grigori were created to sire children, and that their mortal descendants the Nefilim are known to naturally have 6 Forces, and add in the concept of Lilitu as an Avatar herself . . . maybe Eru YHVH Iluvatar wanted humanity to be the deciding factor in the War, and not just the prize.
  • The Angel of Hip-Hop, influenced by postmodern realities and remix/sampler culture, sees the Sub-Creations as ways to forge a new kind of existence, a novel ontology
